Bury Tomorrow Album Review

‘Cannibal’ Album Review

April 3rd, 2020

Bury Tomorrow, a band from Southampton, Hampshire, England bringing you an earful of melodic death metal, which to me, sets the bar for the bands in this genre in 2020. With already three albums that have made the top 40 charts in the UK, ‘Cannibal’, will no doubt fall into this place, if not better. I’ve had the absolute pleasure of getting to listen to this album, and I have listened to it from top to bottom, side to side, and top to bottom again because I can not stop. This whole album could be a soundtrack to an epic action movie, like Lord of the Rings or 300. It’s that good.

Cannibal’, the 6th studio album of Bury Tomorrow was suppose too make its debut to the world April 3rd, 2020. However, the band and their team decided to postpone that date until July 3rd, 2020 due to the Covid-19 Virus that has effected all of us around the world in so many ways. The guys feared their loyal fan base would not receive the copy of the ordered album and didn’t want to risk that, along with rescheduling a tour they had planned out for the album in Europe that was also postponed. Light was brought into the situation from the band promising more songs off the album will drop and some online interactions will happen while we wait for the music industry to fall back in place, along with life as we know it in general.

Daniel Winter-Bates, lead vocalist, poured his heart out into these vocals, in which you can feel them reaching into a place that is good to let out every now and again. Rhythm guitarist and vocalist, Jason Cameron, is just an unbelievably talented musician, singing with an angelic voice that puts goosebumps on your skin after being in a deeper mind set with Daniel, oh yeah, and playing rhythm guitar keeping up with lead guitarist, Kristan Dawson. This album flows with melodic heavy guitar riffs and an electric power. These aren’t your average leads here people, its inspiring to hear as a die hard music fan. Then we are blessed with solos in songs like ‘Voice and Truth’ and ‘Quake' that will make you want to pick up a guitar and pretend you know what you are doing. This guitar team is a force to be reckoned with. Let's not forget about the backbone of the band or any band really. Bassist, Davyd Winter-Bates, smacks this album in the face with his deep, powerful tone of his bass, which is usually an Ibanez DTB400 though he also uses a few Gibson EB bass guitars. Him and Adam keep this album bouncing, which is what Bury Tomorrow does. Takes heavy death metal and makes you headbang with your entire body. And of course, drummer, Adam Jackson is a hard hitting, beat crushing, driving percussionist as it is. Bury Tomorrow as a whole fits in the pocket perfectly. They are a well rounded team which I find important as a music fan.

An 11 track album, ‘Cannibal’ is not something you can miss out on. Produced by Dan Weller, the same producer they had used for ‘Black Flames’, and mixed and mastered by Archives Holy Hell’s Adam Getgood and Ermin Hamidovic. This album definitely sticks more to the roots of ‘Black Flames’ which who wouldn’t love from this band.

Opening the 6th studio album is ‘Choke'. We dive right into the mood set for the album from the band. This album is chaotic and right to the point. Of what point that is, I’ll let you decide. ‘Cannibal’, the title track of the album. The song that gets stuck in your head after listening to it. The one that reminds you why you love this band. It’s an excellent title track. I find it relevant to the world in what 2020 is right now as well. Bury Tomorrow released a video for ‘Cannibal’ in January to prepare the world for what is to come. It definitely tells a story as to where the new video they just put out on April 3rd for ‘Better Below’ is more focused on the band in a room full of mirrors playing their hearts out. They are definitely keeping the fans hooked waiting for this master piece to come out.

‘Cannibal’ is heavy, stompy, loud, heartfelt and very big. The lyrics, the guitars, the bass line and the killer drum beats, hits those eardrums and your adrenaline starts to pump. When Bury Tomorrow can hit the road again, ‘The Agonist’ will be a huge crowd pleaser for not just the fans, but for the band as well along with ‘Gods and Machines’. As a concert enthusiast I can hear the crowd screaming the words at the band with all they have and the band screaming right back to the wilding, sweaty, hot faced crowd. The only “ballad” on this album, if you would, is ‘Quake’. Not that this song slows down by any means. It definitely is in my top 3 favorites off the album. Jason Cameron kicks this off, it dives into Daniels epic vocals as the band takes a more gentle toll on their instruments. ‘Quake’ has my favorite solo of the whole record. It’s beautiful. But to be honest so aren’t the rest.

All in all, I give this one a 10 out of 10. It is the definition of the band Bury Tomorrow. It does not disappoint in the least. And I personally can not wait for them to hit the US with a badass tour to showcase the work of this one. Find it everywhere July 3rd, 2020. Where the world will be a little more back to normal and loaded with fantastic new music.
